ROOIBOS TEAS

Pronounced “roy-boss,” rooibos is grown high in the mountains of South Africa. Like other tisanes (herbal-teas), rooibos is rich in naturally occurring nutrients and it is naturally caffeine free. Though it varies from leaf to leaf, at a particular point in the plant’s oxidation process, the leaves develop a reddish-brown color, thus explaining their moniker - “Redbush Tea”.
Tea drinkers everywhere consider “Redbush” -or Rooibos-to be South Africa’s gift to the world. Understandably so, the sense of tranquility it helps bring forth can calm even the most active minds.  Even so, it’s the full-bodied taste—along with its ability to confidently manage different flavors—that is winning people over. From fruity bouquets that energize as much as they soothe, to citrine profiles capable of extending subtle tastes well past what’s expected, rooibos is always an experience in flavor mastery. And in many cases, the flavors of rooibos will lead you to believe in love at first taste.

In South Africa, where it was once substituted for expensive, imported black teas, rooibos is generally drunk with milk and sugar. Most other enthusiasts around the world find the flavor of rooibos sweet and mild enough to make the addition of milk and sugar unnecessary. Plus, when bits of chocolate, lemon myrtle, peach, or vanilla are added, the mingling of tastes is truly sensational.

A drink to sip throughout any day, it’s technically a “tisane” or herbal tea; thus, rooibos may be drank at any time of day. Preparation is very easy: it is best steeped in water just off the boil for 8 to 10 minutes. Green and chai varieties are also available.
